Hello,
I'm Ben. This is my online workbench, filled with the various media formats i've toyed with or destroyed. I'm currently submersing myself into a pool of web technologies, particularly Cold Fusion and a little AJAX. I've finished my degree program at the University of Leeds and i'm awaiting official classification. If you think my skills might be valuable to your web/ print project then please drop me a line...

Icount animation | Face your carbon elephant!

This brief required the creation of a 30 second animation and functional game to promote the Icoun message - taking control of your carbon impact on the planet is easy!

The Animation (shown left):
Here the message is driven home with a linear narrative and easy to follow graphics. The key to this animation was simplicity, not to overcomplicate the message as to ensure all viewers would understand and gain a clear understanding of the point.

The Game:

The game allows the user to move their carbon elephant left and right and fire chewed up food at the falling rubbish, each time an item is hit, it is removed from the stage, if an item reaches the ground, the user looses one of their six lives. The game has a total of four levels which get progressively harder as more objects must be destroyed to continue. The game complements the animation, the two should be used as part of a full promotional campaign promoting all of the Icount steps.

Play the game!

Audio on Canvas

Audio on Canvas represents a desire to create. The audio/visual piece utilizes both a strong visual sense combined with an abstract and yet soothing aural experience. This should evoke curiosity and intrigue from the user, encouraging them to explore further. The piece allows the user to create their own unique visuals within the constraints of the canvas, and then listen to an aural representation of their visuals - specific to the sequence of pattern they build up on the canvas.

Audio on Canvas can be related to a Chapter in Lev Manovich’s book “The Language of New Media” which discusses ‘“Postmodernism” and Photoshop’ Photoshop, whilst not technically preventing users from beginning their art piece from scratch, are encouraged to follow a natural process, the logic of selection. Audio on Canvas acts in a similar way, by defining constraints of the elements the user interacts with. Audio on Canvas is by no means working to the same scale as something as massive as Photoshop, but should be considered to fall into the same category of digital art, as it encourages a natural progression of selection. “ Although computer software “naturalizes” the model of authorship as selection from libraries or predefined objects, we can already find this model at work in old media, such as magic lantern slide shows” Lev Manovich goes on to argue that these slideshows are “perfect examples” of authorship as selection – the placing together of objects that the author did not create, the creative energy of the author is thrust into the selection and sequencing of the available elements, rather than into the original design.
